Why Your Google Ads Conversion Numbers Might Be Wrong
Date Published
The problem with "it looks like it's working"
Google Ads will happily report conversions even when the underlying tracking is broken, duplicated, or misattributed. A campaign can look profitable in the dashboard while the real numbers tell a completely different story.
Duplicate conversions
One of the most common issues: a single purchase or lead getting counted twice — once from a page-load tag and again from a form-submission or button-click tag firing on the same event. This inflates conversion counts and skews Smart Bidding decisions.
GA4 vs. Google Ads attribution mismatches
GA4 and Google Ads can use different attribution models by default, which means the numbers you see in each platform will rarely match exactly. The real risk is when the gap is large enough that it's masking a tracking bug, not just a modeling difference.
How to check your own setup
Start with GTM Preview mode and watch each conversion event fire in real time. Then cross-reference GA4 DebugView against what Google Ads is reporting. If something looks off, it usually is — and it is almost always fixable without a full retag.
